Claim Your Share of $9.4 Trillion Through Climate Change

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

Use the climate crisis to grab your share of $9.4 trillion by 2030.

That’s the thrust of Boston Consulting Group’s August report, The Green Economy Represents an Opportunity to Supercharge New Zealand. They have listed five opportunity areas but that’s not the point. My message is there are openings everywhere if you reflect on the future and position your organisation.

For the record, the areas BCG lists are eco-tourism, sustainable construction, low carbon energy, sustainable food production and green consumer products (premium retail products with a green tinge).

The other prime suspect forced to decarbonise (i.e. switched away from fossil fuels) is transportation.

Every business or person in New Zealand interacts with a least a few of the six areas listed. So, how are you positioning your business to take advantage? You’d have to be sleeping with your head under the duvet not to carve out a slice of that $9 billion pie.

There’s a reason BlackRock, one of the world’s biggest investment funds, has set up offices in New Zealand and around the world. And, as Michele Embling, Chair of the XRB, said at yesterday’s Climate Change & Business Conference, “there’s enough to go round”.

Chris Jewell’s Lodestone Energy showcases how a New Zealand start-up can raise almost over $800M in two short years whilst accelerating New Zealand’s toward net carbon zero by 2050.

This is the first article in a series highlighting the financial opportunities available to strategically-minded business leaders. They will illustrate how the NZ and global economic system is likely to be flipped on its head over the next few decades.
