GreenHalo's marketing contractor was appointed on a recommendation of the guy sitting beside me during a QTN-CHC flight. Yesterday on the same flight, I sat beside the Director of one of NZ’s largest companies and dirtiest carbon emitters. He was also connected to a large sheep & beef station. He was a nice guy and knowledgeable about emissions so the scene was set for a lively discussion.
Frustratingly, he believes carbon reduction was mostly ‘pulling an invisible rabbit out of a hat’ to satisfy contract obligations. I could tell he was struggling to get beyond the financial impact on NZ Inc and his company. He was frustrated about remaining competitive in the market and wondered why NZ should be so compliant when other countries aren’t. He was frustrated and our conversation was frustrating.
And then, as we approached landing, he confessed he was actively supporting his company’s emission reduction initiatives, that he has owned two Teslas and always considers his carbon emissions in holiday choices. “Well, you have to be a leader”, he said. We agreed there is no overnight fix to emissions reduction and that a steady change in behaviour gives hope to humanity.
This high-rolling Director was actually an environmental supporter, but the pace of technology and collaborative progress was leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. After all our debate, I left the airport feeling optimistic about corporate intent.
